21 August Day of Tribute to Victims of Terrorism: Remembering Survivors and Strengthening Solidarity
Every 21 August, the world marks the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism. This day aims to remember the victims and survivors of terrorism and to affirm that their rights, dignity, and needs must not be forgotten.
This observance was established by the UN General Assembly through Resolution 72/165 on 19 December 2017. The UN considers recognition of victims an important part of efforts to counter terrorism, while also reminding of the real impact of violence and the importance of building peaceful societies.
UN member states have the primary responsibility to provide protection and support to victims, not only immediately after an attack, but also in the process of recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society. This moment underscores the importance of solidarity, protection of human rights, and a shared commitment to prevent terrorism.
