14 People Killed by Lightning Strikes in Bangladesh
Lightning strikes killed at least 14 people across various districts in Bangladesh on Sunday (26/4), as thunderstorms hit several areas after a prolonged period of heatwaves. The incidents occurred in seven districts, including five victims in Gaibandha, two in Thakurgaon, two in Sirajganj, two in Jamalpur, and one each in Panchgart, Natore, and Bogra, according to police and local media reports.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department stated that isolated rainfall is likely to continue in some areas over the next few days, which could help ease the heatwave that has affected most of the country. Rain accompanied by lightning was reported in Dhaka, Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet on the same day.
The Save the Society and Thunderstorm Awareness Forum, a volunteer organization, noted that 330 people died from lightning in Bangladesh last year, with most victims being farmers working in open fields. The organization emphasized the importance of using safety gear, such as plastic or rubber boots, during the summer and rainy seasons to reduce the risk. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has been issuing lightning warnings since last year in response to the rising casualty toll.
