10 Major Events in the Month of Muharram Experienced by the Prophets
Muharram is not just a marker of the Hijri new year, but it’s also packed with historical events loaded with spiritual meaning. Here are 10 important events that took place in the month of Muharram in Islamic history.
The most foundational event is the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina, which became the basis for establishing the Hijri calendar during the time of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA). On the day of Ashura, Allah SWT saved Prophet Moses (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh’s pursuit by parting the Red Sea, and then drowning Pharaoh and his army. This event is the background for the recommended Ashura fast for Muslims, after Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) found the Jews in Medina fasting on that day as an act of gratitude.
Besides that, in the month of Muharram, the repentance of Prophet Adam (AS) and Eve was accepted, Prophet Noah (AS) and his followers were saved from the great flood, Prophet Abraham (AS) was saved from the fire of King Nimrod, Prophet Jonah (AS) was brought out from the belly of the whale, Prophet Joseph (AS) was freed from prison, and Prophet Job (AS) was healed from his skin disease. All these events show Allah SWT’s help and mercy to His prophets.
Another important event is the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), on the 10th of Muharram in the year 61 AH at Karbala. He fell in the Battle of Karbala after refusing to pledge allegiance to Caliph Yazid ibn Mu’awiyah.
