1.61 Meter Tsunami Hits Reo Manggarai Coast After NTT M7.7 Quake
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a 1.61 meter tsunami wave hitting Reo, Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Saturday (15/8/2026) after a shallow tectonic earthquake of magnitude 7.7 shook the northern region of Flores Island. Tsunami waves were also observed in Maurole, Ende (0.94 meters), as well as Bulukumba and Sape Bima (over 0.5 meters).
BMKG head Teuku Faisal Fathani explained that the tsunami early warning was issued only 2 minutes 16 seconds after the main quake, and was updated 10 minutes later after the quake parameters stabilized. BMKG ended all tsunami early warnings at 07.30 WIB after sea level monitoring confirmed that sea conditions had returned to safe.
Until 14.00 WIB, BMKG recorded 235 aftershocks with magnitudes between M2.5 and M6.2. Faisal estimates the natural decay process will take 2 to 3 weeks, following the pattern of previous earthquake recordings in North Maluku. This earthquake was triggered by the Flores Back Arc Thrust fault activity at a depth of 15 km, shallower than the M7.8 earthquake in 1992 at a depth of 28 km.
BMKG urges the public to trust official data from the national network supported by more than 2,000 seismic sensors, including 553 dedicated seismograph sensors across Indonesia.
